ALCOA Diabetes Project (Completed 2005)
Diabetes is a chronic disease, and is a major public health
issue especially as our population ages. More than 1.5 million Canadians
have diabetes and another 750,000 have the disease but are unaware
of it. Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, or type 2 diabetes,
occurs usually after the age of 40 and is the most common form of
the disease. Diabetes is a condition that progresses with age and
can lead to cardiovascular disease and other debilitating health
problems.
